Holiday Blues

Don't let the smiles, flashy gifts and social media posts fool you. EVERYONE has some type of holiday blues. Yes some blues are far more tragic than others but the important part is to know that you are not alone.

The holidays come around every year and if you know that this time of the year is a somber one for you, the key is to try and prepare yourself in advance. Here are a few things that I have learned over the years for dealing with holiday blues.

RECOGNIZE THAT YOU ARE FEELING THE HOLIDAY BLUES:

Stop being in denial about your feelings. Face them head on, embrace that they are apart of your life, but also recognize that YOU control how these feelings are going to affect your holiday. This is the first step to healing your heart.

EMBRACE THESE FEELINGS, DON'T LET THEM CONSUME YOU:

Its ok to have occasional moments of sadness. Especially if you are dealing with a loss of a loved one. This is the hardest holiday blues to get through. If the loss is recent, even more so. It can help to have time set aside where you celebrate that person and in return recognize your strength to get through it. Focus on the positives of this season, and the special memories that person brought to them, and know that they are celebrating with you in Heaven.

SHARE YOUR FEELINGS WITHOUT BRINGING OTHERS DOWN:

Everyone knows the saying "Misery loves company". There is a thin line between sharing your feelings and seeking company. The solution is to share these feelings with God first and then with those who love you. Im not talking about those who love you on social media, but those who genuinely love you (the ones who know something is wrong by just looking at you). Not everyone should be priviledged to your most inner thoughts and feelings.

FIND YOUR PEACE:

Find what keeps you happy throughout the year and bring that to the holiday season. Change is good. If traveling allows you to be happy throughout the year, plan a trip during the holidays. It's ok to go against the tradition, this just may be the reason you can't shake those holiday blues. Live for those you have lost and miss so dearly. Believe me this is what they want for you.
