How To Feel Helpful, While Feeling Helpless

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love helping people; but what many don’t know is that I often feel more helpless than helpful. I have had to teach myself that I can’t help everyone. Here are a few things I tell myself when I’m feeling helpless in a situation:
THE BATTLE IS NOT YOURS…IT’S THE LORD:
This may sound cliché to some, but for me, it’s my saving grace phrase in times when I feel so helpless. When I was younger, my mom used to play this song in the house, when I was pregnant with my daughter I would take the headphones place them on my belly and let her listen to this powerful song by Yolanda Adams. No one knows how many times this song has given me confidence in knowing, that I have done all that I could in a situation and the rest is left to Him. I’m pretty sure my neighbors have heard me belt this tune out on several occasions. After hitting those notes like Yolanda, (stop laughing your girl got some pipes LOL) I always feel much better. So if you find yourself feeling like you are tired and can’t fight anymore, say these words out loud “For all things work, according to the Master’s holy will, no matter what you’re going through, remember God is using you, for the battle is not yours it’s the Lords.” These words are powerful and lead me right into my favorite bible verse….
ROMANS 8:28:
If you don’t know what this verse says, then shame on you! I don’t know this verse because I’m an avid Bible reader, but because this is one of my daddy’s favorite scriptures and it has proven to be one of the most powerful things I could have ever committed to memory. The verse says “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” (KJV). If you have read any of my previous posts you know that I try to be a positive ray of sunshine in all situations. This verse helps me to find light in times where I feel so helpless. It reassures me that everything that happens, both good and bad are working in accordance to God’s plan for our lives and the lives of those around us. I thank God every day for a father who loves the Lord and is not ashamed to talk about it! Both my parents taught me how to praise Him in good and in bad times. So when I am feeling like I am no help to anyone, I refer back to this verse.
BE HELPFUL IN YOUR OWN WAY:
My grandma used to say all the time, “Don’t you let everyone pray over you.” I never understood what that meant until I got older. Prayers are good right? Well according to Dot, no they aren’t. Think about it, if someone has a hurtful and malicious spirit, you don’t want that person praying for you…I know I don’t. How many times on social media have you seen a status like “Ya’ll pray for me.” I look at this 3 different ways: 1) I’m glad that people know that there is power in prayer, 2) are they seeking attention so people can ask what’s wrong, 3) they asked me to pray so I will, but do they really want everyone on their timeline to pray for them? I know, I know I’m overthinking this whole thing, but it’s the helper in me. So when I see these types of things, I bow my head and say a quick prayer for whatever that person is going through. I mean I literally say those words. There, see I helped in the best way I knew how. If this was my younger self, I would send them a private message asking what was wrong and if they needed anything else. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still do this if I have a certain relationship with you, but if you are a random person on my timeline, my prayer is what you asked for. I said all that, to say this, not everyone wants, expects or deserves the amount of help you are able or willing to give; so don’t ever think that what you did wasn’t good enough. You never know, but a kind word can mean more than a $100 to a person who really only needs kind words. FYI if you giving out hundreds I’ll take a few…you know if you feeling helpful and all…LOL
But in all seriousness, when your heart and intentions are pure, have confidence in knowing that you are helping in any situation you may feel helpless in and God will bless you for it!
