A Letter To My Daughter

With every passing year, it gets harder to accept the fact that you will no longer need me. You will soon go off to college find a new set of friends that are cooler than me (I highly doubt the cooler part) but will no longer be there for me to talk to in person every day. As we celebrate the month of your birth and the 17th year of you being my best friend, I still see the 5 pound 12 ounce baby girl that decided to enter the world on the 22nd day of the 7th month on the day of my sorority’s 7th annual summer picnic and step show. I knew you would be special!
From day one you have taught me something about myself that I never knew before. You taught me to love myself when I felt no one else did, to be strong even when I felt weak, to give selflessly, to love unconditionally, to hustle harder, to never give up and most importantly to follow my dreams! It is my hope that I am as much of an inspiration to you as you are to me. You are the reason I wake up each morning and deal with the cruel and harsh realities of being an educated black woman. All I want to be is a great example of what a daughter, wife and mother should be. I hope that I am doing that!
When I look at you, I see a bright future! Whatever you set your mind to, you do and that inspires me to be better! I pray for you every hour of the day. I pray that you find a man that will treat you like the princess you are and the Queen you are becoming. If you haven’t figured it out by now, I will ALWAYS have your back! I tell you when you are wrong and praise you when you are right. You are my best friend but I will still bust you up if you get out of line (thank God that doesn’t happen often LOL). You are a great big sister to your little nugget (as you call him). I’m sure we will both cry for the first month you are gone off to college, but that’s ok because we know you will visit often for food, money and to do laundry LOL.
You are a blessing babydoll! I’m so proud of you! You have proven yourself to be an excellent leader, academically, athletically and socially. You are the true example of a great daughter! Remember that you are beautiful both inside and out, don’t ever let anyone dim your light! The road ahead will be a hard one, but I have confidence that you will persevere like you always do!
If I can leave you with any pieces of advice it would be this:
1. Pray and thank God every day.
2. Love yourself first.
3. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
4. Do not lower your expectations to please others.
5. Learn something new every day.
6. Always listen to your gut. That’s God speaking.
7. Don’t change who are.
8. Never give up.
9. Reach for the stars and don’t forget all the people who supported you getting there!
10. Always find the positive in every situation.
11. Be true to yourself.
12. Live BLOUNT-ly
I’ve cried too many tears typing this so I will end it here! LOL I know you are shaking your head calling me a water head! Yeah yeah yeah…I know! I love you never forget that!!!!
Love Always,
Mommy
